What Do You Do With an Idea?
What Do You Do With an Idea?
by Yobi Yamada
Summary
This story introduces a young boy and his idea. The young boy is unsure of his idea at first, but as his confidence grows, so does his idea. He decides to nurture his idea and bring it into the world. This heartfelt story will inspire readers both young and old to follow their dreams and be true to themselves.
Personal Response
I personally love the response of this text that your idea isn't going anywhere, it's just getting started. This book sends a powerful message to readers to be brave and embrace who they are. The world needs more creativity and light, and this is just the book to inspire that.
Literary Elements
Personification is used through giving an abstract quality to the form of the idea. Imagery is used to depict the idea. I would classify the genre of the story as a fiction picture book. Themes within the book include bravery, dreaming, being true to yourself, and having a growth mindset.
Illustrations
The medium of black and white illustrations before the idea comes to life support the notion that without the dare to dream and create, the world is lacking- lacking in color, lacking in life, lacking in your idea. Subdued colors can express weariness, boredom, and serenity, whereas intense (or saturated) colors evoke feelings of energy, vibrancy, and excitement (Galda, 2017). As the idea begins to take flight we see more colors incorporated in the illustrations. When the idea is released into the world, the colors are explosive and invoke a feeling of joy to support the message within the text.
Activity
Students can create a flip book. The first page is entitled 'My ideas can change the world!' by (students name). The first page students will write and illustrate their idea and how they can make the idea grow. The second page will present another idea and how to make it grow. The third page will present the third idea and how the student will make it grow.

Elizabeth, One technique to get kids to connect with the topics discussed in Yobi Yamada's book "What Do You Do With an Idea?" is to have them write an illustrated diary entry about a personal experience they had with an idea. This activity not only emphasizes the book's theme of valuing creativity and innovation, but it also encourages students to reflect on their own experiences and thoughts. This might include a period when they invented something new, devised a novel solution to an issue, or launched a creative endeavor.
ReplyDeleteThis book would be great in a classroom. Children often lack in confidence and that may keep them from a lot of things. It can sometimes lead to scary things. This is a book that I would love to have in my classroom. Thanks for sharing!
